Questions people ask
How does GoodPing check whether a site is down?
We make a real HTTP request from our server in London and, at the same time, send ICMP pings to the host. If the site answers with a normal status code it is up for us. If it does not, we tell you exactly why — DNS failure, connection refused, timeout, or a TLS error — instead of a vague "down".
Is it down for everyone or just me?
If our check says a site is up but you cannot reach it, the problem is on your side of the connection: your DNS resolver, your ISP, your network, or the browser cache. If our check fails too, the outage is at the site or somewhere between it and the wider internet.
Do I need an account to use the tools?
No. Every tool on GoodPing runs without signing up. You only give an email address if you want us to monitor a site for you and send alerts when it goes down.
How often does the free monitoring check my site?
Every five minutes, around the clock. We only email you when the state actually changes — down, then back up — so a long outage produces two emails, not hundreds.
Are results cached?
Live checks you run yourself are never served from cache. The "is it down" pages cache the result for 60 seconds so a burst of visitors during an outage does not hammer an already struggling server.
