503 Service Unavailable

The server is reachable and answering, but is temporarily unable to serve the request — overloaded, or in maintenance mode.

What causes it

  • A traffic spike beyond capacity.
  • Maintenance mode left switched on after an update.
  • A backend pool with no healthy members.
  • Resource limits on shared hosting.

If you are the visitor

  • Wait a few minutes and retry — this is at the site's end, not yours.

If it is your website

  • Return 503 with a Retry-After header during planned maintenance so search engines return rather than de-index.
  • Check whether a maintenance flag has been left in place.
  • Look at load, worker counts and process limits.
