503 Service Unavailable
The server is reachable and answering, but is temporarily unable to serve the request — overloaded, or in maintenance mode.
What causes it
- A traffic spike beyond capacity.
- Maintenance mode left switched on after an update.
- A backend pool with no healthy members.
- Resource limits on shared hosting.
If you are the visitor
- Wait a few minutes and retry — this is at the site's end, not yours.
If it is your website
- Return 503 with a Retry-After header during planned maintenance so search engines return rather than de-index.
- Check whether a maintenance flag has been left in place.
- Look at load, worker counts and process limits.
