NET::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID

The certificate is valid but does not cover the hostname in the address bar.

What causes it

  • A certificate for example.com being used on www.example.com, or the reverse.
  • A wildcard certificate being used on a second-level subdomain it does not cover.
  • Several sites on one IP with SNI misconfigured, so the wrong certificate is served.

If you are the visitor

  • Try the address with and without the www prefix.

If it is your website

  • Reissue the certificate with every hostname you serve listed.
  • Check the vhost configuration binds the right certificate to the right server name.
